If you would be interested in an internship in the summer of 2013 please get in touch in February 2013. Thanks :-)
What's this all about?
Read the general info here. We're always looking for
exceptional engineering interns.
Who should apply?
Please apply if:
you have experience with technologies like linux, scripting languages (our favorite is perl), javascript (especially jquery), xml, apache, and mysql.
We don't expect you to be an expert. We do expect you to be smart, hard working, and a fast learner. Many of our past interns have been new to perl. Fear not. Perl is easy to learn, especially if you know php, python or ruby.
you program on unix (or linux)
We don't care if you use emacs or vi, but we're not building on top of Windows or .Net. Make sure you feel comfortable in a unix/linux environment.
you get excited about creating an amazing user experience.
We want to impress in every way.
you love playing with large datasets.
This is more than simple scripts. This is building complex systems to
scalably pass lots of data between many machines.
you have at least three months.
You'll learn a lot. That doesn't happen overnight.
you have communication skills on par with your tech/quantitative skills
We value your ability to generate ideas, provide feedback, and communicate with our international team as much as your coding skills.
you're in London
That's where we are. We're not hiring remote workers. We're looking forward to some intense and fast paced face-to-face brainstorming sessions. You need to be in London.
ideally you are fluent in at least one other major EU language besides English (French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, etc).
The more the better. We want to amaze users everywhere.
Who should NOT apply?
Please don't apply if:
you're looking for a boring 9 to 5 job.
This won't be boring. It will sometimes be more than 9 to 5.
you don't deal well with rigorous peer review of your work.
We'll be working very collaboratively.
you can't work full time
We may have part time opportunities later. Please don't apply now.
TL;DR
Umm, well if you're serious you should probably read the job description. But
you can also watch this video where we interview Kevin, who was an intern with
us in 2009-2010 as part of his final year of getting a degree in computer science. Kevin's time with us has now ended, he's now getting his master's degree at Imperial.
Seriously though, read the position description
What sort of time commitment do I need?
At least three months. Ideally longer. See above.
Will this internship make me filthy rich?
No. If it's money you're after go work in the sub-basement of a bank on an obscure back end system that no one will care about.
If you want the chance to work on critical projects used by millions of people, to have a voice in designing complex systems, to have your ideas be valued, and to learn an exceptional amount in a very short period of time then this is the place for you.
Will this internship position me well for future jobs?
Yes. You'll be learning from internet veterans. You'll be writing mission critical code. You'll have your ideas rigorously peer reviewed, and be expected to rigorously review the work of others. You'll work in an international team tackling complex technical problems. You'll have direct exposure to the company's founders and be able to say "I was there back when...". In short, when a recruiter asks you "Tell me what you did at Lokku." you'll have answers that will blow him away.
If I do well, will my internship turn into a permanent or part-time position?
It's possible. Several current full time employees started as interns.
I don't study Comp Sci. Do I qualify?
We couldn't care less what or where you study, what you look like, or where you are from. If you're smart, hard working, fun to sit next to in an office, and meet the basic requirements defined above you should apply.
Will you pay for my travel to London?
No.
Can you help me get a work permit?
No. You need to be able to work in the UK.
What are the dates of the internship?
You can start tomorrow if you have the right skills and attitude.
Ok, I get it, this will be hard but interesting work. I'll learn a lot and have real responsibility. That's cool, but will I have fun?
Well we can't force you. So far we're having a blast.
Nice! So is this internship a good way for me to come live in London and party my face off?
Not exactly.
Apply for this internship if you're serious about building something
you can be proud of. Apply for this internship if you want to learn how
to build internet sites used by millions of people in multiple
countries. Apply for this internship if you want to be able to say that you
were part of a successful European internet start-up. These are the things that need to motivate you. All that being said, we do manage to hit the pub
for a pint or three every so often.
Is this for real?
Yes.
Okay, I'm interested. What's the process from here?
We look forward to hearing from you, just shoot us an email at
